>I just got back from VT — it was just what I needed, some time away from it all.
I’m home, kinda wish I was still up on the top of the mountain.
Nicole and I headed up to my brother’s on Friday, he lives up on a mountain in Fletcher VT. It’s right next to Armstrong Mtn, and very close to Smugger’s Notch. We were hell-bent on camping, so after reservations at the Green River Reservoir fell through — we headed up to my brother’s mountain. We did an initial survey to see if there was suitable camping area up there, and in fact there was a perfect camp site. Up on the very top, a solid rock with a bed of moss was our home for the weekend. We blazed our own trail up with our equipment and set up camp. I hauled some rocks up to make a fire circle, and we set up the tent on a perfectly-sized bed of moss. It was a deligtful little camp, we even had front steps down to the path.
It was just as well that we didn’t get reservations at the resevoir because we had quite a time finding it. We headed out Saturday morning with a map, a borrowed truck, and two brand new kayaks. It took us about 2 & 1/2 hours to find it after stopping 3 times for directions. Everyone would describe the same thing, but it wasn’t what we were seeing when we went down the road, after trying all possibilities, going up a few driveways, and even turning around at the entrance to the resevoir (there is no sign… someone stole it I guess?), we finally arrived.
The resevoir was beautiful, there are campsites all around the lake, which is humongous, with even a few island sites. We checked out a few for “next time” and pretty much got the entire tour of the area while stopping to eat our sandwiches and beers in places. Most of the good sites that we noticed were closed for rehabitation… but 29 through 32 are all excellent. If you want to check it out it’s in Hyde Park, VT — Green River Resevoir. It’s very northern VT, and give yourself plenty of time for both finding the resevoir and your site. I’ll post some directions and info on it in the future. Though I’d advise going back when there’s not so many other people are trying to have a vacation at the same time =]
So it was wonderful to be where we were, the first people to camp at a given spot, high above everything… and still within close proximity of my brother’s should we need any ameneties. I wish I had gotten some pictures of the camp, but it will all look much better when I cut the view out of the current tree line. It’s all grown up, and there’s quite a bit of brush blocking a perfectly wonderful view. I’ll take care of that next time ^-^
I feel refreshed, rejuvinated. Ahh.
