I’m going all for broke and Limewire is helping me do it. Written all in Java, it’s gotten much less chunky over the past year or so. It can still be finicky, but the only “spyware” is limeshop – a web-shopping portal. It doesn’t collect info unless you actually use that part of it which is easily avoided. The newest version of adaware will detect and remove it, anyhow.

If you’re a fan of Live DJ Sets (as I am) you must check out – djmixes2k.com, but please don’t unless you have a) downloaded all the latest windows/IE security fixes & b) are confident in your internet knowledge.

The Anti-Leech plugin is needed. It’s a sneaky bastard, but it’s possible to use without getting spyware installed. The first time I downloaded, I was fine, no messages… the seccond thing I attempted to download I was prompted with a message to download Flashtalk. I was able to flag the site it was coming from as “untrusted” and to block it in the future.

If you don’t know precisely what you’re doing, please don’t attempt it. I’d hate to recommend something to people only to infect them with more spyware.

[Mini-Rant]

It seems the internet is becoming a regular war-zone. It’s like people putting up their own detour signs on highways. They may look official to the untrained eye, and you may have no way of knowing until you find yourself on a dirt road in the middle of the woods lined with endless road-side stands touting wares, going 15mph to avoid the potholes. New computers come packed with programs to help make the bottom line lower for the consumer, like being able to buy a house for cheap because the bottom floor is already being rented out to hooligans.

For people new to the internet, there’s no way of knowing one error message from another, and popup ads come from whatever site you’re visiting anyway… so how is “Joe Schmo” able to tell the difference?

They’re not.

They can only hope they’re able to remove the parasites with tools like Adaware, above.
