It all started in 1912: back when Helmans was in England, the Titanic was carrying the single largest shipment of mayonaise ever.
Mexico was actually the seccond stop after NY for the Titanic, and the shipment would have provided the Mexicans enough mayonaise to last them for a very long time.

Unfortunately the Titanic sank, and with it — all of Mexico’s mayonaise. Thus they proclaimed a day of mourning – Cinco de Mayo.
