Apple was touting the mac as the solution for those tired of viruses. Granted, it’s been known for quite some time but they never needed to advertise it.
What makes it worse is that Apple really isn’t immune anymore. They’ve got an intel core, a processor that can be accessed via code already made for the PC, so a virus can be adapted with a modified front end designed with a certain mac in mind.
Power PC chips just didn’t do viruses. It wouldn’t be able to keep going after an invalid process, stop, and there you are — no fun for mr malice.
CISC is designed to account for errors, and keep going, so it gets something unusual, a bad value, and moves on, virus code continues, goes back to get the invalid value, sneak under the radar, and boom — it now can do whatever it wants.
In addition, the more visible you make it — the more people are going to think about it. By saying your immune, you’re taunting the people who have nothing better to do then prove you wrong.
They want to be the one to take you down, because you put it in their face, now everyone knows it’s impossible and it makes it all the more glorifying to s/he who finally does it.
Bad form Apple, bad form.
