DSL: It sucks now
http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/
D8JL2LK80.htm?sub=apn_tech_down&chan=tc
I kept my DSL for 3 reasons
A) It's a faster ping
B) I expected the Universal Service Fund to go away due to federal deregulation of DSL
C) They told me I would no longer require a phone line.
It costs me $29.99 a month for DSL with a $12 phone line.
When I called Verizon they said I could change my service to "Dry Loop" which would mean I would no longer have to have a phone line.
"Great! Can I do that?"
"Yes, I do show that you qualify for that service, however it would be $39.99 a month"
"Why would I want that?"
"Well, you don't have to have a phone line"
"But it's the same ammount of money as having my DSL plus a phone line?!!"
"It offers you a choice"
"Well I'd like to cancel my service at this point, because the reason I renewed was because they said the USF would be going away and I wouldn't need a phone line."
"OK, well I can cancel your service but an early termination fee will apply"
"No, I want to cancel without a termination fee because Verizon didn't keep their end of the bargain."
"Yes we did, our end of the bargain was providing you service."
"What about your sales practices then, because they told me those things so I'd renew"
*Silence*
"So I'm going to pay the same price for less service, does this make sense to you?!!"
"Yes, it does sir"
"Well I'm glad YOU'RE happy with Verizon's services - *CLICK*"
It's all a big F U to me and all the other customers who have been waiting for this.
I'm so pissed right now, I'm writing a letter to them while I'm still angry.

Any idea why Gnarles Barkley is so infectious? (DJ) Danger Mouse.
If that sounds familiar - how about the Gray album, the blending of
The Beatles: The White Album & Jay-Z: The Black Album
He blended the albums, and released them to P2P. He mixed them so well they became a sensation. I thought it was great, he's a really talented guy. He's now part of a group: Gnarles Barkley, so if you haven't given it a chance - do it.

I love my UPS. We had a massive lightning strike last night, power died so I ran into the computer room to turn everything off. I shutdown the computer, unplugged the monitor and then
*WHAM*POP* BZZZZZZT EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!The UPS was making a constant loud noise. I turned it off, not sure what had happened. I didn't get a chance to actually test it until this afternoon. My 1000AMP/600W APC UPS took one for the team. I plugged everything into the wall and it all worked without issue. Not so much could be said for yon UPS.
I called up APC, and with a little typing they noted my dead UPS and sent me a new one. I don't want to think of what would have happened if the UPS didn't protect everything. I imagine it would have been a much more lengthly process but I'm glad I can wonder about it.
They're replacing my existing one, and I thought it would be a good idea to go get a higher wattage UPS and use the replacement for Nicole's PC. After all, it could have toasted hers just as easily had it not been plugged into the non-backup outlets on the unit. I went to COMPUSA and got a new one that was on sale. Unfortunately I got the serial data cable model. It's the very old, very large style. it's 1100v 670W for just a tad bit more then my previous model cost me, on sale. I contemplated returning it once I got it home and saw the serial cable, but I have a USB to serial adapter, and I never used the software anyhow. I don't tend to leave the computer on when I'm not home, so it's not a big deal.
So the lesson is -
get a UPS, love it, and feel safe.
You can get struck by lightning and it'll be OK.
I mean you could technically get by with a surge protector, but you've got that extra level of protection with a UPS.
I also picked up OSX 10.4 so I could
A) get the mac running and
B) spend enough to get no interest for 6 months.
I have 10.2, but there are no widgets... and I so love my widgets. I could have downloaded
Konfabulator... if I had OSX 10.3 but again, out of luck. So Jay -- see me about a horse, I've got what you neeeeeeeed.

I think I neglected posting
F.E.A.R. Multiplayer for FREE due to issues with the site. It doesn't get past step 2 (sends you in an endless loop) but they're aware of the issue and it doesn't seem to hamper getting the CD Key.
Download the game while you're waiting for the CD key. I'm downloading it via Bit Torrent and show 1 day 7 hours remaining.

Jay came over last week - we hung out played video games (what I mentioned in the previous post) then we went out to the Salty Dog.
It was a really slow night, and we got there early to boot so it was completely empty. It filled up and then Jay saw someone he recognized. We popped over to say hi, got introduced and wouldn't ya know it... Rachel Friedman-Siddiqui, right there in Springfield, right there at the Salty Dog.
I thought the girl was dead. She stopped calling me, she moved, she disappeared, all after getting some serious chemo after a bout with cancer she borrowed some money, wouldn't meet me in person, and dropped most of it off in my car with a short note that said "sorry".
So I'm thinking she's really in trouble, that she was either dying, or... something... I don't know what. I was happy to see her alive, but didn't know what to make of it. I was overwhelmed, gave her a hug, and went back to my group.
Strange. It's certainly a small world.

I really want to go home and play games. I play online, so it's not exactly by myself but it's so much better when there's someone else there.
Last week was so much fun, hanging out and playing video games, just like old times. I wish I could do it all the time. Going up a level, executing an extraordinary crash, laying the smack down, or winning that new car just means so much more when there's someone else to see it.

I'm not sure why the version doesn't appear to change in Help=>About.
I didn't care, because I just wanted to
share. It will download .NET framework 2.0 unless you already have it.
Apparently I was too anxious and overlooked something.
It doesn't want to work on this machine.
I'll figure out what it's doing tomorrow.
*update* I didn't actually get any chance to see why this might not be working on other people's PCs. I was afraid I grabbed the wrong version. I may have published a version previously that didn't have this stuff in it. However it seems to recognize that something has been dragged over it, it just freezes after that.
I created a new site: http://software.cgsystems.biz so I could publish updates, but try and connect to
the publish page to install it. I keep getting an XML page. Anyone else care to give it a shot to help me troubleshoot?

Nick Mangold's 16 y/o sister is following in his footsteps.
I found this while wanting to post that I had an idea, and I'll be adding it to QuickLink soon. I'm hoping I'll get everything done in my extra time at lunch. I've still got some major projects in Access and VB6 prior to .NET time but I'll get some.
I'm planning on adding drag and drop capability to QuickLink. I'm hoping for a much smaller app. Drag, drop, then the text window appears with the applicable code.
I've still got to target it at my specific HTML code (available with registration) or allow standalone exporting which is how most people will use it, I'm sure.
It's everything you need to have your own link scroll, as above.
QuickLinks - Drag and Drop your way to publishing.Meant to be used as a link feed, drag and drop your .URL or .TXT files, upload, and you've got links.
I'll post the new setup ASAP.

I'm sitting here pathetically waiting for the UPS man. I'm actually on the front porch, for fear that I won't be able to reach the ground floor in time with only a doorbell separating me from my new monitor. Everything looks ok in the system, delivery date is on time, and they often come late around here.
It's normally 5:30 or so, sometimes as late as 6:00. I guess I should just go back upstairs and get the office ready. I'm just anxious. I'm waiting for Santa to arrive. Every diesel I hear makes my ear perk. I check around, but nope, it's just a tow truck...

If you're not a geek you have not heard about SLi. Even if you are a geek you may not have heard about QuadSLi. BFG fit 2 graphics cards on 1 PCIEx interface, allowing those who don't have SLi to get SLi performance, and those that do have SLi to get QuadSLi performance.
In order to take advantage of the image quality these cards allow, you need a
big frikken monitor, but you will be gaming like never before if you have the money.

I know there are those out there who don't really like the whole "smash up" car games such as Destruction Derby and Flatout, but I love them.
I loved FlatOUT but thought it could use something. FlatOUT 2 synches all those shortcomings and blasts them *KABOOOM!*. It's really fun.
I give it a 5 out of 5. You have to do the demoltion derby (trashy cars) before you can get to race mode, and you have to complete the race mode before you can get to Street Mode. The cars are really powerful and the graphics are unbelievable. I was able to crank it right out of the box. I don't know who's doing the coding but major Kudos to them. They've got physics, crashing, and effects all in one game while still being pumped up to the max with Antriscopic and Antialiasing @ 1280 x 1024. I'm amazed, and it's SO MUCH FUN!!!
(oh yeah, and Nicole likes it)

Apparently there was a big hubub with Travelers in the news. Some agents were giving kickbacks to those that pointed their customers in the direction of Travelers instead of the competition. Whereas many businesses and individuals were paid more money then they would have paid otherwise if the insurance agent did their job and fit the individual to the company / plan.
Travelers apologized but did not accept any wrongdoing, in that they did not condone the unacceptible behavior of these representatives.
