I just got back from doing my taxes.
In one day, (well, techinically in two weeks) I'm magically out of debt, the curtain lifted! I can now enjoy my year fresh, anew, without over a grand in credit card payments every month. I'll actually have somthing in my savings. It's amazing.
My return is big enough to cover everything. I'm so light right now.

Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms (album) - Money for Nothin (song) You may know it as "that song", "the first computer generated video on MTV", or "the chicks song" - you've heard it, but do you have a story about it?
Post your comments about when you first heard the song. I'll be updating in less then a day with my story, but I've got company coming soon -- but I would also like to hear from others.

This guy was a janitor.
Here is the rat video.
A sample of Japanese commercialsHave you heard about
Clerks 2?
Post your own "Kevin Federline is a flaming retard" comment! It's fun! look for mine!
I also posted some Rusted Root. I went to go see them in December, and captured some of the moment on my phone. Apparently there's this new video format that phones create. It's a 3gp extension. I think it's MPEG4 so Quicktime reads it, but not by default, on this computer at least. I don't know about editing it though, which is what the first 3 videos will need, as they're 90 degrees sideways. I'll probably get Quicktime Pro at some point, or the iTunes video plug in to view on an iPod... someday.

The Prejudice Map - what do you get when you type "Europeans are known for" into Google? "Americans are known for"? check it out, it's interesting.
I've got a neat old video I found: "Washing the Rat"
I hope to put it up on
You Tube and will certainly post a link once I do. I'd post it here, but I'd much rather people see it there and make it popular, driving more traffic back here! Soooooo diabolical!
Oh, and if you're wondering where the daily links are... I've got some I've collected on lunch, but have not uploaded them. I haven't had time to put them into Quicklink! Nor have I had time to work on Quicklink! MultiCHAT, the program I developed for users to chat all over the company in a "bulletin board" type of program is close to release. there's some last minute bug fixes I'm working on, as well as a DB I have to put together so they know what files are on a server... all this stuff, and it's all big, and it all needs to be done top priority! No time! Literally!
So they exist, they're just not uploaded.

iTunes just added a whole bunch of new videos from MTV networks. No big deal, right?
Wrong! Comedy central is part of that network, and they have their "Comedy Central Presents" series available like:
Dane Cook
Mitch HedbergI can't link to the videos directly, but you should be able to find them by clicking "TV Shows" they're prominently displayed, and the above links will give you an idea as to what each of these two comics are about.

I've been so damn busy.
work has been nuts, I've just been trying to get home in a reasonable ammount of time and relax.
I picked up a Belkin Nostromo Speedpad n52 for gaming, it's like a hand sized keyboard with ergo rest, thumb directional pad that works like a joystick, and the best part - the macro/remap software for it. It can be any key, joystick or mouse button.
It takes a while to configure, but once you get the hang of it, it's really comfortable.
I've only tried it with the FPS games so far, I've gotten back on a Battlefield 2 kick after the last update. They fixed some exploits, no more car bombs (putting mines on a jeep and ramming a tank blows it sky high) as the mines no longer stick to the cars. There's also a few other items, like being able to see how far until you reach your next level and unlock the other weapons, that are also a plus.
I went to Finish Line this evening, I showed him how he can use his program that he uses all the time to create a web page. He can worry about colors, fonts, all that stuff -- I'll just slice the big pic up for the web and put the text in. I'm thinking it'll be a couple of hours of web time. It's not like doing it all myself, but I really don't have the time for it, and want him to be proud of it. I don't want him thinking I'm the reason his website isn't doing well.
It's how often you change it, what it's got on it, and what people are searching for to get to your site.
I heard my Dad just got laid off today. I don't know what to think. He's got to sell the house -- so he says. He always asumes the worst, and at 66 he doesn't think anyone will hire him. It's really low that they laid him off, you know they'll just hire some young kid who'll get paid a 1/3rd of what they were paying him.
He said something about offering the house up. I don't have enough to buy it. i would... maybe if he had helped me out. I'd be happy to bail him out, but he never bailed me out. he never gave me any money, said I had to earn it for myself. Well -- he's got to earn it for himself. I know what he's done to the house, and what it needs... I can't pay him as much as it's worth. I can't live out there and commute to Hartford every day either.
I'm off to St Paul next week -- my first trip out there. We're going out to give everyone the flat panel monitors. Yeehaw, it's a company standard now 19" LCDs. It'll help with morale, make people think we're doing well. They just laid off 100 people today, I guess it was some programmers, mainly in St Paul. They're probably doing away with St Paul anyway, just buy them, work them over, and lay them off. It's how it all works.
At any rate, no one seems to be having much fun except for me. I just ordered my new car, just got approved for a mortgage, and things are going pretty well at the job. We are rated as a whole, accross the entire department and people compete for raises/bonuses based on the level of their performance. Only the top few get it and I'm in the running, but it's too soon to say if I'll actually get anything.
I'll know in another 2 weeks though, and I'll be sure to note if my negative expectations were just jaded, or warranted.
I just ordered a 2006 Subaru Legacy GT. It's sweet. 350hp from a 4 cylendar.
I found
this K&N air filter but it's about $400. I'm also wondering about stereo installation, and tires.
Of course I always have to have the best, and it's unnecessary, especially if I'm getting a house... but I'm working towards my goals and doing well so I'm very happy.
I found a bunch of people I knew from highschool on MySpace linked via Jay and Dan and people. I saw quite a few people from the ol "Drama crew" but am reluctant to talk to anyone. I pissed a lot of people off back then by acting like a tool... seems to be a general pattern of mine. Granted, time has gone by, and it heals all wounds, etc etc but I still feel somewhat weird about it. It was very weird being a teenager, everything was out of whack. I was certainly unbalanced, bipolar, and didn't know who I was, so I tried being a little bit of everything. that resulted in a lot of failed friendships that were, all in all, my fault. I'm kinda sorry for that, but I have my good friends that have stayed true, even if there were a few bumps and disconnections along the way.
Jay, Justin, and Dan are all still there -- I talk with them often, enjoy their company, and they enjoy mine. It's nothing like any other casual friend I've had. They know who I am and they like me, and I enjoy being with them. Being friends shouldn't be difficult, it just is, and it just feels right.
Thanks guys.

post://113803930995467975/
Yesterday was long, very very long.
I spent most of the day installing Windows 2003 server, all the service packs, the network routing tables, and programs. In the down time I played some Carmageddon TDR and even created a new skin featuring me in the drivers seat for the "Charger" model.
I can post it for download if anyone ever even plays Carmageddon TDR anymore. It is so much fun, great as a laptop game when you're on the go, and I think it qualifies as abandonware at this point. I've got the ISO if anyone's interested.
So a little fun, but most of the day was spent working - 10 hours! Plus an extra hour or so, but I was mostly there for moral support for the last part: setting up the Project/Management software they use, so that doesn't count.
All in all a long day.
I wanted to do it on Saturday, then yesterday, and I'm still trying to get my car in good enough shape to stop by the dealership. I want them to tell me how much I can get for it, but I need to make sure it's dry, clean, and I need some epoxy for the turbo gauge which is drooping a little.
Once they give me a price, I can work with them on it, confirm a price for the trade in, the Legacy GT and then order for March. I want a new car for my birthday, dammit.
I also need to stop by FinishLine. He wants to do a revamp of the website on his own. I'm all for it.
I just don't want to do yet another design only to have him tell me "I don't really like to show people the website because I'm not that fond of it." I'm not a mind reader. I know I presented it several times and worked with him to remove the "crazy" background, and tweak things here and there, but unless he can tell me what to do with it - "I just don't like it" doesn't help me fix it.
I was very flustered when I left there on Friday. I had just stopped by to drop off an invoice, he'd already paid, but I wanted to give it to him for his records and I end up getting "trapped" into a computer lesson. Every time I was about to leave, he'd find something that "wasn't working" with his computer, or trying to save a file... silly little stuff interspersed with "so how you doing"?
I was very confused, I kept saying I was leaving and then he's talking about a redesign of the web site. I told him that's just time to code it and reiterated what he said before about wanting to create a site of his own - "if you create it, it's going to be just what you want" I don't want him to be unhappy, but also don't want to waste my time. It's not easy, and I'd really like for him to see that... then maybe he'd appreciate the effort I put into it.
He can't describe what he wants, and that's not my problem -- but he's my customer and he's not happy so it's my fault. I'll stop in, but I don't think it'll be tonight.

I performed brain surgery yesterday.
I ordered a new power supply and chipset fan to fix the issues I've been having.
I had to pull everything apart, given the large size of my heatsink on the CPU, and all the cables I needed to pull out, everything except the motherboard had to move.
Here's the specs of my current system:
ASUS A8N-SLi Deluxe,
AMD FX-55 (rated 2.6ghz)
2 GeForce 7800GTs in SLi mode.
3Gig/Sec SATA2 160gig WesternDigital HD
The chipset fan had burnt out long ago, and would either make noise often, or just not spin half the time which prevented me from being able to leave it on for extended periods of time, and the power supply just couldn't give enough juice when overclocking.
The chip is rated at 2.6, and I had it running at 2.9 but when the cards were both going full steam the power would often dip, causing restarts or errors.
I had gotten a 500W, it was cheap and an emergency purchase that only cost me $40. It wasn't very good but it was worth what I paid.
The new one is 680W, and is made for SLi. It's also rated for higher amperage at the various voltage levels then the previous one. It's not all about Wattage, you've got to have smooth, clean, constant power too.
So to begin, I removed the existing fan from the chipset, and had to cut the heatsink mounts with a wirecutter but got it off. It wasn't designed very well, with the housing around the chip existing solely for the purpose of screwing the fan to it.
I was surprised because where the heatsink sits is about 2 inches square, the size of a 40mm fan, but the actual chipset was barely 1cm square, more like 1cm rectangle. This is what was causing my overheating? All that heat off of one tiny little chip. The old compound had hardened, and I had to kind of chip it off to get a firm connection with the new heatsink and fan, but got it seated on there - no extra screws, it came ready to go with compound/adhesive on the bottom.
I got a CoolerMaster Northbridge chipset, it was just the right size to fit between the two video cards, and goes at a pretty good clip. Where the old one would burn me if I touched it, this was hot enough to be able to touch, even under full load. I had looked at sophisticated towers of cooling power - $35 but damn it was nice (previous links from 011605.html, I think?
The power supply went in easy enough, minus a minor cosmetic change to the fan knob. I had to pull it off to get it to fit in the case. I saved $50 by getting the non-modular power supply, but if you have the funds, get one. They save so much space and they're just spiffy.
I'd say the computer is a good 5 lbs heaver with the new power supply though.
So I put everything in and went to town. I could finally overclock without worrying about the power dipping, or overheating my chipset. I put Hypertransport (AMD64's internal bus that emulates 32-bit bus on chip) at 5x, up from 4 where I had it due to the overheating.
I think the chipset is rated at 1.4 voltage, I tweaked it to 1.55, but put it back down to 1.53 after it made the 12V dip under load. I went with 200mhz x 15 which got me 3gig, then upped the mhz a bit.
So running 3.2 ghz with the PCIEx clock at 110mhz to get a little more out of the 7800s, and everything was very stable, and stayed nice and cool. The chip is already working almost 1/3rd more then stock, and it could probably go higher if go slow, but the speed effects other aspects, mainly my memory needs to be faster if I start messing with the MHZ more.
I went from 10,200 to 11,870 in 3dMark2005, which may not seem like a lot, but my Half-Life 2 64-bit now runs at 96fps in 1200x1024. If only 3DMark2006 was 64 bit, then I could compare 32/64.
So all in all I believe I finally have the system I want. I have enough power to supply all the items I need, and even more. I'm sure it's going to suck down the electricity, but I won't be leaving it on all night either, I say this as the computer is on at home downloading 3DMark2006 via BitTorrent.

Dystopia is a Half-Life 2 Total Conversion. It's 3 maps, and a whole bunch of a new kind of game. You have cyber implants, which have various skills from detecting enemies to cloaking. You "jack in" and while you're in cyberspace your real-world body is vulnerable to attack. Once you're in the cyberspace, you float around in zero gravity, finding terminals and activating real world areas.
The concept alone is really heavy. I'm impressed.
I knew about it before, but never saw the pictures, or really had that much interest. Now since Half-Life 2 just came out with it's 64 bit updates, I'm a lot more interested in it.
The 64-bit revolution has begun!
After this I'm getting Far-Cry, which also has a 64-bit update with exclusive content. These are all being driven by AMD, and it seems they're getting the full on support of gamers everywhere. Intel's architecture is different enough to not be able to take advantage of optimizations specific to AMD's 64-bit which may hurt them, but they really like the Dual-Core solution, just throw more horsepower at it.

I was at work, but then it was a school.
I was walking through the halls, and lost the first part but I remember there were lots of people talking, and then a little 4ft 8" dude, pretty built, and suffering from Nepoleon syndrome, was saying "why the hell is everyone being so fucking gay?!!" and then I hugged him, it made him mad to say the least.
I was walking back up the hall from that when there was a food trailer like you'd see at a fair. No one could get to it because there was a cable around it which attached to a ski-lock looking mechanism around a garbage can. It was the new kind of garbage can made of plastic with wheels and the cover attached. The lock was multicolored, Austin Powers style, and it had a round Dr Evil sticker on it. He was looking menacing with one eyebrow up and his pinky up to his lip. I disabled the lock, which was actually a spy device and plowed into the trash can with my shoulder. I guess there was someone in it because I heard an "oomph" when it went flying.
The food trailer was selling meat, it was larger then normal, with a big grill behind them. There were oversized chunks of chicken, like 18" x 18" x 6" chunks of white meat (maybe whale?), kubasa the size of your arm and a woman who wanted her large chunk of white meat "rare" - a biker chick that looked rather manly, especially the full "Mr Fuzzy"-like beard she had (the magnetic toy where you move the metal shavings around)
I turn back down the hall, but the little guy yelling about how gay everyone was being was still at it, so I turned and on my way back I "locker checked" the garbage can into the lockers, getting another "oomph" from it.
Behind me, Sylvester Stalone was riding a mini firetruck, about shriner's size through the halls of the school. He was being chased by 3 police in similarly small go-kart like "cop cars".
I followed him outside, closing the big metal door on the police.
Outside was "my viper" it had a huge blower on the hood, a convertable, white with blue racing stripes. Vince Vaugn's character in Be Cool was threatening me all menacing-like. He was insinuating that I was messing with the best, and I didn't know what I was getting into as I was about to start my car. I took out two keychain remotes, one I guess was for the car bomb he had set. It deactivated that as I started up the car with the other button.
It ended there, but wow.

I've had a stupid problem lately, well it's been a bit of a problem for a while.
The fan on my Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe motherboard is dying. The Northbridge chipset fan to be specific. Since the SLi bus is controlled by that chip, it gets really hot with only a little overclocking. The fan is designed badly to start, but I have found a couple solutions. For now I'm going to set a graphics card fan on top of the existing heatsink. It should tide me over until the other one from NewEgg arrives. I'm also getting another power supply, a 680W. I know it's going to really suck the juice, but as long as I don't keep it on, I can't see it using any more juice then an XBox 360 ;) heh.
I went with the chipset from newegg, just a CoolerMaster, but there's a couple links regarding possibilities in the (011605.html) links for today. No can linkee, email post.
It will give me a high constant power level that I can overclock to my chips maximum potential. Right now I have the really big heatsink and fan on my CPU but I can't crank enough juice to keep the power constant to it when I overclock it. so I'm stuck hovering about 3ghz, and if I overclock it any more then that it drops the RPMs on the chipset fan (already broken and tends not to want to spin without a touch when first starting or getting really hot) and occationally dips the power to the motherboard. The 12V dips considerably when running really high graphics with the 2 x 7800GTs in SLi.
MORE POWER! So manlike, but... so fragile, like the wings of a butterfly...

GRA! I got home early, we jetted on the server reinstall. We were initially going to backup to another SCSI drive. They didn't want to buy another drive just for backup purposes. So then he had an IDI. The Server doesn't do IDE. So he had a 2.0 USB drive, the server doesn't do 2.0. So we were looking at like 4 hours more.
I gave him the info he'll need for next time, and I've got things like the routing tables, and NIC settings we've done so far, and various screen grabs of important settings. He'll need to back it up prior to me getting there, just get it going the night before. USB 1.0, yay!
At any rate I got home early. I watched a movie with Nicole, as she wans't feeling very well. She got home early from work, as did I, but since she wasn't feeling well we didn't go out to the grocery store like we were going to. There's no food, I don't really feel like eating anyhow. I ate too much the past weekend anyhow.
I had a lot of fun snowboarding, it was just me and Dan and it was fun.
There was quite a bit of snow up at the top. The secondary mountain was a mess, but the main one was good until you got the bottom, but even then there was so much base, it was good snowboarding, just sticky. It was so warm, like 50 that day. It was a little chilly up at the top to start, but warmed up right quick and continued until last night.
I woke up this morning and BAM, snow everywhere. Little icy particles, with a rain the night before, leaving lots and lots of ice under the snow. It took a while to get the car out, but got to Amherst early for the computer work.
So here I am, full circle. All I wanted to do was play WAR! Battlefield 2 is awaiting a patch. There's a total of 5 servers right now, everyone's downloading and installing the patch, which is why it's so
damn slow! If you're looking for it, here it is:
Battlefield 2 patch 1.12 (torrent). I got no bandwidth from the normal links. EA timed out 3 times, and I'm working off FileShack at like 20k right now, grrr... I think it's my connection. With all the ice and snow it seems to have hampered my bits.
3DGamers/FilePlanet VS Torrent VS FileShack
I'm getting 17k 8-10k and 28k / sec respectively.
I may stop the FilePlanet one, the FileShack has more of a lead, I just want to make sure I'm waiting for as little as possible.

I'm currently backing up the server.
We're wiping it and reinstalling 2003 due to HD space issues the very small system partition was running into.
I've put the finishing touches on

Finally, I've got the site
looking how I orginally intended. I guess it just took some ambition.
I've been busy attempting to get to the bottom of the XBox controller. No one knows one way or another. It's a new product, and a very very small percentage of people have purchased the controllers for use with Windows XP.
I'm anxiously awaiting another official driver release, but again... not holding my breath.
I'll be transferring the blog over to the new format. Streamlined, only 2k of code for the main page, the pictures are another story. It's still a long time to load for me on a Wireless connection. It's fine via the office, or from one of the main computers, but it's certainly not instant.
Check it out. Or you'll be seeing it soon anyway.

Follow-up to the XBox story:
I've contacted the PR agency regarding the functionality of the XBox Controller "for Windows XP".
I hope to get to the bottom of things, since the Tech support can't seem to get their heads around this.
If it's an intention to not have the rumble work, there's a problem.
If they did intend to have the rumble work, there's still a problem.
Case 1) They have created a controller that works for both their Microsoft designed XBOX 360 "computer" and conventional PCs running WinXP. However, they apparently did not speak with their DirectX crew regarding how to make ForceFeedback work via DirectInput. The whole point of DirectX is to make it easy on developers and hardware manufacturers so they can easily create a device that is "Plug & Play" with Windows. Conundrum anyone?
Case 2) They fully intended to create ForceFeedback, but somewhere along the lines they put out the wrong driver, or (in traditional Microsoft style) they didn't have it ready for launch. The driver I have was dated Sept 27th. The initial launch date? Can anyone help me out here?
I would like an answer. I was told by XBox tech support: "Oh, yeah... the rumble doesn't work on PC"
I want to know why hackers can put together a driver that rumbles when Microsoft can not. You
wrote DirectX! You
created ForceFeedback (v2 now?), and still... your own hardware device lacks? For SHAME! (
prove me otherwise)
I need to set the record straight, for all you tearing your hair out just like me.
This guy blamed his PC and
Matt's site has got a whole bunch of people with the same issue. Amazingly enough they all want to play Need for Speed Most Wanted with rumble! It seems to be a driving force (no pun intended, honestly!) behind this. A major game developer (Electronic Arts) too! It's not some podunk little game company trying to get Force Feedback to work, EA's done it before. I had NFS 3 and it supported Force Feedback, I think they know how to code it correctly!
They have a down and dirty way to get it to work. First you have to get XBCD - an XBox controller to USB driver utility, then download the "profile" - essentially a .sys file (driver) and .inf (pointer to the driver) that tells XBCD how to speak 360. Once that's done... Nirvana:
Lots O options... and... RUMBLE!
Of course I want to be using the WHQL drivers, but why, oh why don't they rumble?!!
To be continued...

OK, so here's the deal. The "official" Microsoft driver from WindowsGaming.com does not list a "Force" Tab for testing Force Feedback. The only Knowledgebase articles I can find reference Sidewinder and Windows 98. WTF!
Those say to go into a game that supports Force Feedback and try it in there.
I called Tech support, they said they'd put in a ticket. He couldn't give me a ticket number though... hmmm... I'm not going to hold my breath for that one.
I found a review, and several discussion boards, doesn't seem that anyone's been able to get vibration to work. On the plus side I did notice that they have an actual driver for WinXP64, right from the get go, a 64 bit driver! I wonder if they sacrificed the Force Feedback to get a 64 bit driver done in time?
*update* There's a program called Pnnacle, but it remaps the buttons to keyboard, which defeats the whole purpose of the analog sticks. The deadzone also seems to be a big problem, which this other program says will fix the issue.
More investigation is needed!
*update update* (this has taken FAR too much time for a new toy)
Check
this out, it's the modified drivers I used to get it to work.
Incidently it doesn't work for WinXP64, I even tried the Win2k3 package, no luck.
It worked on WinXP Pro but I had to remove the XBOX Controller... directory from c:\Program Files, then I deleted the xn
something.sys file from c:\windows\system32\drivers and the files dated today (like an hour ago, or whenever you installed it) from the c:\windows\inf directory (hidden).
Once you've got that, install the EXE, then run the BAT to copy the .sys and .inf files to the right place (you can always copy them manually if the BAT makes you nervous).

Here's
what really happened to Suprnova.org.
My brand new XBox controller does not seem to be working. Well... it works, but it doesn't rumble. Investigating the issue led to the above link.

I just finished playing F.E.A.R. for PC. It has been quite a while since there was an original story. The story is what set this apart from every other FPS out there. There were parts that I wished for the Half-Life 2 engine, in that you should be able to stack the boxes all over the place and do things with them, or throw a paint can around a corner to distract a guard.
All in all I'd give it 3 out of 4 stars. It flowed pretty well, it was difficult to get lost, because if you took the wrong route, it normally brought you to a dead end with a power up, very unlike Doom in that respect. The graphic effects they used, to pull you into the hallucination scenes, and the tunnel fuzziness that occurs when you engage 'bullet time', blurring anything in your peripheral field of vision.
The scary parts set it apart from your usual FPS, and that's good, because there's nothing wrong with a FPS - they've just been done to death. Most gamers have a "played one, played them all" mentality.
It's worth the $40. Go pick it up, you should flow through it pretty well. At first you're among the pipes, but the scenery changes as you progress. It all goes smoothly, and gives you enough pieces throughout to keep you going, wondering what it all means. I didn't exactly figure it out, I had an idea as to what was going on, but the ending was a very satisfactory one.
I didn't have that feeling that it was all for naught.
