I bought GTA: San Andreas for PC today.
I heard about all the hubub regarding the Hot Coffee patch and then about week later they're recalling the game, stamping an AO label on it, and everyone's pulling it from the shelves. I was worried I wouldn't be able to get an original copy so I went out and snatched it up from EBGAMES, who by the way, still sells it only with proof of age (21) and valid driver's licence.
(So if it's suspended... tough luck?)
How many other games do you know of that only require a minor mod to unlock otherwise unaccessible material?
It's a normal thing for publishers to do. Programmers do what they want, create the version they want to, and then the publisher restricts them. The content is unable to be accessed (look at the year+ that the game has been out for console... there's been no way to access this content thus far) unless the code of the game is modified. Technically illegal, and certainly not the responsibility of Take Two Interactive or Rockstar (North) Games.
I'm very dissapointed that this has become such a high profile issue. Freedoms are becomming less of a reality, more of an ideal that can't be realized for the safety of the majority. From "hot coffee!" (no pun intended, but... HA!) warnings, to cameras everywhere, random searches... it's the principal. If you're not doing anything wrong, if you don't draw attention to yourself... you shouldn't have to be worried that you're not 100% pure, that someone going through your things won't
accidently find something they could charge you with, embarass you with, or make you late for something because they thought you looked shifty eyed.
I don't like where things are headed. I'm ready to get in on an underground information exchange. It won't be long before digital is not beyond the realm of "the man". It's already approaching there because other's can't take responsibility for what they don't know.

I saw Batman Returns last night... in iMAX.
I never want to see a movie any other way again.
I'd seen Polar Express in 3D last year. It was great, but didn't really have anything to compare it to.
With this, it was just huge. It didn't seem all that large to begin with, but it wraps around a bit so it takes up more of your peripheral vision. That seems to be the trick.
At first it took some getting used to, especially durring the fast action but by about 15 minutes in my eyes got established. I was immersed in the film.
So that was the technical aspect of the film. The actual quality of the film was excellent. I was very impressed. Much like Episode III pulled it all together for Star Wars, I expect great things from Batman from here on out.
The general premise was somewhat lame, but it allowed them to create the metaphor of drugs and the downfall of their city.
I think everything worked well as the antagonist was only a small part of the story, and doesn't really turn out to be the real antagonist afterall...
Katie Holmes was lackluster, just not believable as a DA. From servants daughter to DA, while still looking about 22. Huh.

So I liked it very much. Go see it if you can, and if you can see it in iMAX -- all the better. It's only about 2-3 dollars more then a regular movie, but there's no previews, the sound is groundshaking, and there's assigned seats.
iMAX is bringing the cinema experience back to where it ought to be.

I hope you haven't heard of this yet, because when you're ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the screen I'd like to think it's me you'll thank for it (OK -- Chris is really the one that showed it to me) but I'm the one posting the link!

Google Earth and it's going to revolutionize... well, damn near everything -- check it out.
(there are a whole ton of links sitting on the work laptop, but command line FTP doesn't go passive, and doesn't work so hot behind my firewall... maybe tomorrow night, I'm currently in NY)
