What time is it anyway? posted @ 12:19 -x- Sunday, October 26, 2003 post://106721048536896068/ Mental Cleansing Entry I'm done with my room, with a little help from Rachel -- It's all painted and arranged, it finally feels like my room. There's still many piles of CDs to sift through, things to find a place for but it looks good. I bought carpets for the rest of the house, a small step in the right direction for completion of the household. I got frames for posters and various pieces of art I've collected, hung them up in my room and in various places throughout the house. I've still got a few select items I'm waiting on, like a loveseat-sized pappa-san among other things. I've finished my year with the satellite internet access, I can now cancel any time. I just got it up and running today to remind myself how useless it is. That's a bit of a harsh statement, but the proxy creates many many issues that I just don't want to have to deal with to share my internet connection. File sharing is also one of the casualties of using a proxy -- though I did have it running on the main computer, it was impossible to forward the right ports and work with the proxy at the same time. I've got my iMac in my room as well as the PIII 500 (Win2k Pro) which is currently running the satellite, (I was hoping it would do better with sharing the satellite connection, but I've since realized it's just not worth the trouble) with the 19" Trinitron at the foot of my bed for movies. I've put the P4 1.6ghz in the living room with the 21" for running games and movies on the TV, it's perfect with the wireless keyboard and mouse, and the monitor is big enough that I can still see it from the couch if the TV is in use. I've still got an old monitor, and a PII 400mhz running XP to spare... maybe I'll put one in the room upstairs for video... the biggest issue with all this is the power pull. Kristina was using a hair dryer the other day and it blew the fuse -- TV, computer, blow dryer, Scott's computer, and some lights were on. A hair dryer is really high amperage anyhow, but I'd be all set with an extra UPS backup or two. I've got one on my main computer (iMac) and I can't count how many times it's saved me from losing data. I feel strapped, I'm not really -- but compared to RCN days. I could have a full on $30/day food bill back then. Not so much now... I have to actually watch myself. I've figured that I can break even with $10/hour, anything above that is bonus. That will probably be my only criteria. I'm dreading having to pay for school next semester, too -- I'll probably take out my first school loan. .:sigh:. The house is coming together, and I think that's the big piece. The more it feels like home, the more I'll stay here, and the less I'll spend, past the initial expenditures to get it that way. I'm not really kidding anyone, I'm a shopping addict... destined to spiral downwards into financial oblivion! Or maybe not if the business takes off? It sounds awsome, and he appears to be going in more of the direcftion of pop. I heard mixed in versions of "Justin Timberlake - Cry Me a River" and "Madonna - Holywood". It's all very good with a sort of ambient background inbetween the major tunes. I first saw it mentioned on The Daily Show of all places, then saw the commercial they were speaking of. I bought something on Friday -- the new $20 was the most exciting thing the two clerks had ever come across. I was expecting a "well shuckee durn dare" any second. Tonight at GAP, it was again... a very enthusiastic topic of discussion, and again at the sports bar where I stopped in after work to grab a drink (and check up on the Yankees and their doomed-ness!). Again in a request to see America wake up and stop being so pompous and head-in-the-sand-ish and realize we don't set the pace for the world, please try not to act so surprised about this stuff. It's not a new idea -- but is "well -- they'll never be able to counterfeit that" really necessary? Maybe I'm just not that easily excited? Maybe next time the president should just come on TV holding the bill for a close-up - "Behold America -- YOUR NEW 20!!!". In any case the inspector has to come out and look at it before they can use it. Normal turn around time: 48 hours Current turn around time: week + They're unable to use their furnace in the meantime and have been resorting to leaving their oven open to provide the measly bit of heat they have. It's good that it's not freezing out yet, or they'd be screwed. Now that you've heard the issue - here's the cause: Budget cuts forced most of the inspectors to be laid off. There's the same ammount of work for them to do, but less of them to do it. Those remaining are getting perschnickered and saying they need more money for being overworked. So to prove their point, how they're understaffed/underpaid, they choose to do nothing, or very little. This choice results in issues for my friend above and anyone else in a similar perdickiment. * springfield sidenote * Is Melconian in with the "organization" as well? It doesn't appear so, and the woman with 2 kids is no shining star -- she just sends everyone home photos and wants votes. Melconian seems to have the businesses' votes, I see signs in almost every window of all the shops on Sumner/Dickinson, spotted around the city. My only wish -- roads. I'm sure I'd love to have schools and crap but I don't got no kids, yo. I ain't gonna see none o them improoooooovemints. (yo) The roads do need it, however. They seem to allocate funds to the wrong areas. Yeah, the shitty areas ought to continue with the shitty to keep the speeding down... but sometimes you need to speed through those areas to feel safe ;) They're making headway -- now just make the major roads/shortcuts through the city like near the Basketball Hall of Fame. I got my PC back up and running, and it seems just in time for the good stuff (like iTunes). I used the Gyration brand wireless mouse and keyboard at Justin's and I was hooked. Having just hooked up said PC to the TV and Receiver in the living room... I had to have it. In fact I'm on it right now. I can finally have my cake and eat it too. I have the Audigy hooked up via optical for audio as well as mini-din analog and s-video for video. If I'm playing GameCube and want my own music the analog inputs are mixed by the receiver with the analog input from the GameCube - so I can have full surround on GameCube with MP3s and whatnot, and now that iTunes is for PC I can stream any of my music from the iMac upstairs to the living room -- including purchased music! If you know what I mean you're probably just as happy as I am right now =] So unemployment is sucking me dry... it's a lot harder to get up and at them. I am always on the lookout for something fun to do that doesn't cost too much money... so drinking is out ;) I usually just end up chilling at home. Good for me, but I feel like I'm hibernating. I'm finally realizing I have too many toys to use, but I'm trying really hard to integrate them all into one uber-entertainment complex gyro-thingy o'love. I'm certainly having fun trying. Nothing matches computer graphics, I realize that once again. When it comes to bargain bin hunting though... GameCube is key. Imagine that. It was the day prior, she was on crutches so didn't make it any worse... but had been assuming a sprain, until it worsened. She broke it pretty damn good too. I love when I hear that CD Protection doesn't work and it's especially amusing when it's because of the "SHIFT" key. Arnold Schwarzenegger is Governor of CA. I never thought it would happen. We're 2 steps away from realizing the future portrayed by Demolition Man. First they need to repeal the part of the constitution that says they have to be born in the country to be president -- then to elect him as president. That wouldn't be so bad. I think we'd all feel a bit more 'bad-ass' with Arnold backing us. ;) Siegfried and Roy is no more, I'm pretty sure at this point. You may get back on the horse, but you tend to leave a tiger the fuck alone. It was inevitable, screw with tigers long enough... Heartbreakers is a rather good movie, a tad sappy -- Ray Liota, it was amusing and a true catharsis. Well... maybe just a little belly tingle, but I liked it. Just out of curiosity, I checked out "rebuilding ground zero" an interactive. From the panorama it looks like it's well on it's way. The plan encompasses everything I wanted -- a tall spire to symbolize the height, memorial to remember them, functional transportation restored... almost a new Grand Central. Poker night tonight, going to try my luck. Time to clean up the house -- with just me here, any mess is my own. I was going to go visit Mom tomorrow, but I have to work... I guess today would have been a good day, but I ended up finally painting, with a little help. I need to make Mom feel special, but already promised the day -- before I remembered my Mom's. .:sigh:. I was thinking of a morning surprise, maybe a breakfast -- let's see if I can pull it off, then to work... then to party, then a fun day on Sunday. Sleep is not necessary at this point, I slept enough today -- and I'll get a 2nd wind after I get out of work... I think ;) Too many birthdays! I was supposed to have someone move in, but he said something about hanging out first... yeah, great and all if I wasn't running rampant this weekend. I need to at least give him a call -- he works nights so it's hard to call each other at the right time. 2 weeks prior might have been a better time, then everything could have gone smoothly as of the 1st, and I wouldn't have to take the hit for rent in the meanwhile? sigh Gamecube is $99.
