So I got a call from a debt collector. I’ve been wondering what it’s for for a while, but it was always an automated call so I’d call them back at the number provided and leave a message – without ever getting a message back. It didn’t sound familiar the company they were citing, and I’ve been paying everything pretty well so I wasn’t expecting anything.

Finally I called back the number that called me, and surprise I got someone right away (should have thought of that sooner). Low and behold it appears that my old apartment never had my name taken off the electric bill, so they ran up a good 2 years or so… all without a whisper to me in the meanwhile. My thought is they must have changed some aspect of the account information for me not to receive any sort of notification about the past due bill until now (apparently they finally cut the cord in March of 2007).

So I had to go through a whole rigamarole with reporting an incident to the police for identity theft and more. The company says that is all I need to send. I doubt it’s over with but it’s not my problem… and finally for once it’s not just a copout. It’s technically my problem because it’s my name and social but I have enough evidence to prove that my previous landlords had the information and could have done anything they want with it. Maybe I need to change my social now? Dunno. Nothing is showing on my credit report, so at least there’s that. .:sigh:.
